Overview

The Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple is located in Doi Suthep Mountain, which is around 15 km away from main center of Chiang Mai. In fact the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple is one of the most scared and popular temple in northern part of Thailand. This temple was built in 1383 and is an important pilgrimage center for Buddhism and a golden chedi comprising of relic of Buddha. Since the temple is located in the top of a hill, it provides scenic views and peaceful environment.

What are the highlights of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep?

  • The temple comprises of a golden chedi which is believed to have the relic of Budhha (a piece of Lord Buddha’s bone). This is one of the main attractions which makes the temple sacred and draws Buddhist monks and pilgrims from different parts of the country.
  • Since the temple is located on top of Doi Suthep Mountain, it provides scenic views of the surrounding, with peaceful and tranquil ambiance, ideal for meditation and prayers.
  • In order to reach the top of the temple, devotees and pilgrims will have to walk around 306 steps, which comprised of Naga (serpent) staircase that is complexly carved. Devotees can also wish to take the funicular tram to the top of the hill, if you are tired to walk.
  • The temple complex also comprises of a small museum that has a collection of important manuscripts, paintings, documents, statues, etc.
  • To engross yourself in prayers and reflecting on your deeds, there is a section that comprises of bell tower and small shrines for engaging in the same.
  • Visitors visiting this sacred temple will have a chance to attend prayers and listen to the chants of the monks. They can be a part of the daily prayer session and engage in mediation. Also, light candles and incense sticks as a part of offering your prayers to Lord Buddha.

How to Reach Wat Phra That Doi Suthep?

  • By Taxi or Motorbike: Tourists can reach Wat Phra That Doi Suthep from Chiang Mai by taking a Taxi or Motorbike which is around 15 km away.  
  • By Songthaew (Red Truck): Tourists can also opt for a red truck ride to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep from Chiang Mai, which are shared taxis and are a popular local ride around Chiang Mai district. Fares start from 50-100 THB (1.50-3.00 USD), and depends whether you are traveling on shared or private basis.  
  • By tour package: Otherwise tourist can opt for half day trip package, from Chiang Mai, which will include pick and drop and a guide.
