Wat Phra Singh is also popularly known as the Temple of the Lion Buddha and is one of the most scared temples in Chiang Mai district, situated in Chiang Mai’s Old City. It is famous for its enriching history and beautiful architectural design comprising of Lanna architectural style. The Temple of the Lion Buddha was built in the 14th century. It is one of the must-visit temples in Chiang Mai district.

What are the highlights of Wat Phra Singh?

  • One of the highlight of this temple is the Phra Singh Buddha Statue (popularly referred to as the Lion Buddha statue). It is believed that this Lion Buddha statue originated from Sri Lanka. Many Buddhist monks and devotees visit this temple to offer their prayers and during the Songkran festival, the statue is taken out and paraded throughout the streets.
  • The main prayer hall (referred to as Viharn Lai Kham in Thai) is built beautifully with Lanna architectural style with gold decors, beautiful paintings, intricate wooden carvings and fascinating craftsmanship.
  • The ordination hall (referred to as Ubosot in Thai) consists of another Buddha statue made of solid gold, the Phra Chao Thong Tip Buddha statue.
  • The temple is also an important center for Buddhism learning, there is a large community of monks residing in the temple residential complex, learning and meditating and chanting paryers.

How to Reach Wat Phra Singh?

  • By Taxi or Tuk-Tuk: Tourists can reach Wat Phra Singh from Chiang Mai’s Old City by taking a taxi or Tuk-Tuk or on foot if you are staying nearby.
  • By Songthaew (Red Truck): Tourists can also opt for a red truck ride to the temple, which are shared taxis and are a popular local ride around Chiang Mai district.
